Our Den Challenge minisite
A group project in which we were tasked with producing online promotions for the Eden Project's den building event, which encourages families to spend time outside and work together to build a den out of various materials. I managed the project and worked on the HTML, PHP and Actionscript, while Claudia Grant was layout and graphics designer, Aqeel Akbar developed flash content and Vicky Hill produced a viral advertising video.
We developed a mini-site that not only informs visitors about the event, but gets across the message for kids to get outside and work together, solving the problems of building their own den in the back garden. Our site allows users to share photos of their dens, and an interactive flash map zooms into any region of the country to view the submissions. This required a MySQL database to be built, as well as a PHP admin system that would allow a controller at the Eden Project to accept or deny submissions, in order to prevent the posting of inappropriate material. There are also scripts to save out specifically resized images that the flash application can show, and it reads from an XML version of the database contents.
The project culminated in a pitch to the web manager of the Eden Project, and of seven projects shown, we and another team were chosen as joint winners of the competition. We are now in discussion with the Eden Project regarding their use of this system to keep the message of den building going after the event has taken place.
